Youthful skin is unmistakable. It’s naturally smooth, supple and plump, with even tone and texture and a radiant glow. A youthful appearance is viewed as a sign of good health and considered attractive across cultures — so it’s no surprise that most of us want to hold onto it for as long as possible. Beautiful skin starts at home with healthy diet choices, hydration, quality sleep, a consistent skincare routine and daily sun protection. But as time passes, and the signs of aging and environmental damage become more pronounced, you may require additional treatments and therapies to address these cosmetic concerns.
Microneedling is a minimally-invasive skin treatment that rejuvenates your complexion by encouraging your body’s natural healing responses. Done alone or in combination with platelet-rich plasma therapy, microneedling is an ideal solution for patients who are looking for a quick, comfortable and effective way to revitalize their skin. Although your skin appears to be a single protective layer that covers the outside of your body, it is in fact multiple smaller layers, primarily the epidermis (the visible outer layer), the dermis (the middle layer) and the subcutaneous tissue (the deepest layer). The dermis is thick with connective tissue including collagen and elastin fibers, which form an internal scaffold that gives your skin its built-in strength and resilience. When you’re young, these fibers are lost and replaced with great efficiency. As you age, the systems that generate new collagen and elastin slow, and the breakdown of these fibers eventually exceeds your body’s ability to replace them. This is when your skin starts to show the wear and tear of everyday life. Collagen and elastin production must be increased to maintain a youthful look.
Microneedling, also known as skin needling or collagen induction therapy, restores your skin by stimulating collagen and elastin growth. During the procedure, a specialized device containing many tiny needles is used to create small punctures or “micro-injuries” in your skin. These wounds may be unnoticeable to the naked eye, but your body recognizes them as injuries and initiates a healing response to repair them. New collagen and elastin form to regenerate the damaged tissue and cellular turnover increases. In the weeks following a microneedling treatment, you will notice gradual improvements in your complexion.
Microneedling treatments can address a number of common skin concerns, including wrinkles and fine lines, acne scarring, stretch marks, dullness, skin laxity, poor skin tone or texture, enlarged pores and unwanted pigmentation. When you visit our Las Vegas office for a consultation, Dr. Sharma will assess the condition of your skin and discuss your goals to determine if microneedling will meet your needs. He may suggest complementary treatments or alternative treatment options if he believes they will be beneficial.
Microneedling can produce beautiful results as a stand-alone treatment, but many patients choose to combine it with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for more substantial improvements. PRP is a preparation derived from your own blood that contains a high concentration of growth factors that accelerate collagen and elastin production. When PRP is added to a microneedling treatment, it acts as an all-natural skin serum that optimizes healing and renewal of skin cells. Mixing these two powerful therapies together can help you achieve more dramatic and longer-lasting benefits.
During a complimentary consultation, Dr. Sharma will help you decide whether microneedling with PRP is right for you. Microneedling can be performed on most ages and skin types, as well as on many different areas of the body. Dr. Sharma can adjust the needle depth and speed according to the specific needs of your skin, ensuring the treatment is targeted to your goals and safe for your body. Additionally, because platelet-rich plasma comes from your own body, there is very little risk of allergic reaction or rejection. This is one of the most natural methods of rejuvenating the skin available today.
Microneedling may not be suitable if you have contraindications like a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring or an active skin condition in the area of treatment. Your eligibility will also be evaluated based on what you hope to achieve with your treatment. Microneedling and PRP therapy offer subtle but significant results that can improve early signs of aging without surgery. If you’re looking for more dramatic changes, longer-lasting results or correction of advanced signs of aging, a surgical approach may be more appropriate.
On the day of your treatment, please arrive with a clean face free of makeup, sunscreen and skincare products. We will apply a topical anesthetic to ensure your discomfort is minimized. We will then use the microneedling device over each section of skin in a systematic pattern, concentrating on the areas that need the most attention. Some areas may be more sensitive than others, but overall, most patients tolerate microneedling well.
If you choose to include PRP therapy in your treatment, we will draw a small amount of blood and process it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and platelets from other components of your blood. The concentrated PRP can then be used as a topical serum with the microneedling. The pinprick micro-channels created by the needles allow the PRP to penetrate deep into your skin so that it reaches the optimal depth for stimulating collagen and elastin growth.
Slight swelling, redness and tenderness can occur after microneedling. These are normal effects to experience in the first few days after the treatment. They resolve quickly for most patients and should not prevent you from resuming your regular routine. You are welcome to return to your daily activities with few restrictions. It’s best to avoid strenuous exercise and the use of cosmetics for at least 24 hours after your treatment. Practicing good sun protection while your skin heals is also important. You will receive complete microneedling aftercare instructions before you leave Luxe MD Aesthetics.
Microneedling achieves the best results with an initial series of treatments followed by regular touch-ups. Your skin will look and feel healthier soon after your first session. These results will intensify as your body produces new supplies of collagen and elastin, a process that can continue for months after a treatment. The recommended number of treatments in your initial series will depend on the condition of your skin and your progress during the series. Dr. Sharma will create a personalized treatment schedule that ensures your skin always looks its best.
In the continuous quest for healthy and youthful skin, microneedling and PRP therapy have become increasingly popular rejuvenation techniques. Dr. Bikas Sharma is proud to be at the forefront of aesthetic medical practices and offer PRP microneedling treatments to patients in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas.
