Although neuromodulators and dermal fillers are both effective treatments for reversing the clock, there are key differences between these popular injectables. Depending on your specific concerns, you may benefit from one or the other, or a combination of both. Dr. Sharma and his team strive to understand the unique desires of each of his clients in the Greater Las Vegas region and ensures every injectable treatment is tailored to every individual.
Neuromodulators are a type of injectable formulated with botulinum toxin that minimizes wrinkles by temporarily inhibiting muscle movement. When they are injected into the targeted areas, neuromodulators cause the underlying muscles to relax, which gradually smooths the appearance of wrinkles in the overlying skin.
Neuromodulators specifically target lines on the face that are caused by muscle movement, called “dynamic wrinkles.” Dynamic wrinkles become deeply ingrained on the face over time due to repetitive movements and facial expressions. Common dynamic wrinkles include crow’s feet, which are wrinkles near the eyes caused by squinting, and deep vertical lines at the center of the eyebrows (“eleven lines”) that develop from frowning.
The most popular neuromodulator is Botox, however, Luxe MD Aesthetics also carries the neuromodulators Xeomin and Dysport. These work the same way as Botox but vary slightly in their formula and the length of time they last. Our expert Nurse Injector will go over options with you during an initial consultation to determine which is best suited for you.
Botox is the most well known neuromodulator simply because it’s been around the longest. Compared to the other neuromodulators, Botox is “heavier” so it doesn’t spread around as easily. This means that it’s best suited for target areas, such as the area between the brows. For Dysport, the formulation differs from Botox, which allows for it to spread more easily. This means it’s a great treatment for wider areas where wrinkles are present, such as the forehead. The neuromodulator is also a great alternative for patients who’ve stopped responding to Botox. And Xeomin acts much like Botox, but the formulation differs because it consists of only one ingredient which lessens the possibility of having an allergic reaction.
The effects of Botox, Xeomin and Dysport last around three to four months for most patients but this is also dependent on many factors including body chemistry.
Neuromodulators are less effective for addressing wrinkles caused by decreased facial volume and elasticity of the skin. However, Dr. Sharma offers injectables that are specifically designed to treat these lines.
“Static wrinkles” are the other kind of lines that may appear on your face as you age. These wrinkles are not related to muscle movement – they’re noticeable even when the face is stationary because they’re related to reduced production of collagen in the body, which causes the skin to sag and a loss of plumpness. Static wrinkles are commonly seen around the mouth and cheeks. Dermal fillers are an effective solution for temporarily treating these types of wrinkles.
Dermal fillers are gel-like products that are injected under the surface of the skin to increase volume in desired areas. Luxe MD Aesthetics offers a variety of popular brands of dermal fillers that differ in their use but contain the same primary ingredient: hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance found in the skin that keeps it hydrated and full. Juvederm manufactures a wide range of hyaluronic acid fillers that are designed to treat different areas of the face.
Some Juvederm products are meant for treating wrinkles around the mouth, for instance, while others are best used for increasing volume near the cheeks. We also offer Restylane. Restylane is useful for increasing volume around the mouth and cheeks, as well as for reducing bags found near the eyes and increasing volume in the back of the hands.
Juvederm and Restylane can last a few months up to two years, depending on which type of filler is used and where it is injected. Over time, the body will naturally absorb the injected gel and the results will gradually fade. A unique aspect of Juvederm and Restylane is that results can be reversed. If a client is dissatisfied with the outcome from hyaluronic acid fillers, they can easily be dissolved by the enzyme hyaluronidase, returning injected areas back to normal.
Other fillers also available are: Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Voluma, Radiesse, Revanesse Versa, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Kysse.
During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Sharma will help you decide which type of injectable would be best for you.
If our expert Nurse Injector determines you’re the right candidate and a type of injectable is decided upon, the treatment can proceed.
Treatments with neuromodulators and dermal fillers are quick and done in-office. Once a treatment plan is agreed upon, Our Expert Nurse Injector the best site for your injections to ensure they are done safely and effectively. There is minimal pain associated with any cosmetic injectable, but the use of a numbing anesthetic can be discussed if desired.
During a treatment with Botox, Xeomin or Dysport, a thin needle will be inserted a thin needle into the skin to the underlying muscles. A tiny amount of botulinum toxin will be released and disrupt the neuroreceptors found in the muscles. The number of injections required to achieve your goals will depend on several factors, including how many areas are being treated.
Likewise, the number of injections needed for a dermal filler treatment is dependent on how many areas are treated and the extent of collagen loss. Dr. Sharma will use an ultra-fine needle to place the filler below the skin in the regions with deficient volume and fill them with the gel-like substance. A Juvederm or Restylane treatment can take as little as15 minutes, or longer if there are more areas to treat to achieve your desired outcome. Juvederm and Restylane also contain lidocaine, which decreases pain during treatment.
Results generally take around seven to 14 days to become apparent after a neuromodulator treatment. As the muscles relax in the treated areas, you’ll notice your wrinkles begin to smooth out. The effects typically last for around three to six months before muscle movement returns and lines reappear. Neuromodulator treatments can be scheduled at regular intervals to maintain their beneficial effects.
The thin needle inserted for both injections will produce a small amount of discomfort and bruising may occur. However, bruising is only temporary and any pain felt can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medications.
With dermal filler injections, results are seen immediately. The product instantly adds shape and volume to the area where it was injected. Wrinkles and lines in the treated area will be substantially decreased and your face or hands will take on fuller, more youthful contours. Dermal filler treatments may also be repeated regularly to continue enjoying the improvements.
At Luxe MD Aesthetics of Las Vegas, we understand the physical and mental burden that fine lines and wrinkles can cause. Although they are a natural part of the aging process, they’re a troubling sight and can be difficult to accept when you feel energetic and youthful on the inside. And sometimes it isn’t because of age — wrinkles can develop naturally at a young age due to genetic factors, prolonged exposure to the sun or excessively animated facial expressions.
